    Rossi: "My favorite Yamaha
In a fitting end to their collaboration, Yamaha left it to Valentino Rossi to recount the evolution of the M1 from 2004-2010, during their traditional year end press conference. But while Masao Furusawa, Rossi's direct link to the Japanese factory, was present in the flesh, the Italian rider did his talking via video. It is an interesting and entertaining trip through his years on the M1. Rossi offers some insight and frank assessments of his race bikes, which Furusawa saw fit to occasionally pause and comment upon during the press conference.

When Rossi was discussing the 2006 bike, Furusawa said, “Rossi is a very particular personality. He isn't only a great rider, but also a great tester. He has a optimal technical understanding, and I don't have anything to add to his comments."

Furusawa also presented some technical slides, which present some fairly vague graphics indicating the progress made with the bike recently. There is a fine line between sharing information with the press and keeping important data from your rivals; in this case it seems that Yamaha has erred on the side of caution, but the charts and graphs are interesting nonetheless.

Getting back to the bikes, Valentino reckons that the 2005 M1 was the best of them all: “It had good stability, agility, and power. We were quite fast on the straights, but without losing any of the strong handling characteristics. The bike was very well balanced, and that was the secret.”

This was around the time when electronic development began to accelerate rapidly, and Furusawa made an interesting comment regarding its increased role in bike performance. According to the Japanese manager, if engine performance in 2004 was 80% related to mechanics and 20% to electronics, the situation has almost reversed completely, with 60% being of performance now tied to electronics and 40% to mechanical factors.

Furusawa also offered up some interesting insight into the development of the longer lasting engines for this season: "A long life motor, which has to last for 2,000 km or twice the distance of a Suzuka 8 hour race, costs the same as an old race motor. No more, no less. But in order to achieve the necessary reliability, it was necessary to build twenty test engines." In other words, Yamaha never realized the cost savings the engine rule intended to provide.

A quick summary of Rossi's assessments

2004 - OW P3 - Good traction and agility, development focused on drivability in the engine
2005 – OW P4 - Redesigned chassis and engine, creating a well balanced package
2006 – OWR3 - Next generation fly by wire, new bore and stroke, +5 hp, +400 rpm, new engine brake control system, new electronic throttle management
2007 – OWS4 - 800cc engine, 21 liter fuel tanki, real time vehicle dynamics, lighter and more compact engine (-3,5 Kg), chassis rigidity modified, +2.000 rpm, -3% fuel consumption, new fairing design
    2008 – OWS5 – Pneumatic valves, +12% horsepower, +8% torque, better cooling: -10° water temp, -15° oil temp
    2009 – OWS8 – Reduced internal friction, modified airbox, +4% power, +3% torque, piston temperature down -30°.
