Here's the most remarkable thing to me about Federer: Seems to me that the more you know about tennis, the more amazed you are by the guy. If you know nothing at all about tennis, he's amazing. If you know a little something about tennis—maybe you have played a few times in your life—he's more amazing. If you know a little more about tennis—maybe you played in high school and once had illusions of becoming a pro—he's even MORE amazing. And if you were a great player—if you are a McEnroe or a Connors or a Jim Courier—then Federer is preposterously amazing

        • Kakva mašinerija...

16.januar 2017. How Tennis Australia is building a global broadcasting business

Tennis Australia's broadcast production business will go global for the first time this year, producing the inaugural Laver Cup event in September to beam to television networks around the world.

The event, which bears the name of Australia's greatest male player, Rod Laver, will pit six of Europe's best players – including superstars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal – against a team representing the rest of the world.

Selections will be made based on rankings as well as picks from team captains Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. If the teams were selected now, players such as young Australian star Nick Kyrgios, world No.1 Andy Murray and Australian Open third seed Milos Raonic would qualify.

Tennis Australia owns a 20 per cent share of the event, with other stakes held by Federer's management company, the United States Tennis Association and Brazilian-Swiss billionaire private equity investor Jorge Paulo Lemann.

That stake, for which Tennis Australia has already invested about $2.8 million and will inject another $5.2 million , represents a big business opportunity, according to the organisation's chief executive Craig Tiley.

"It is the first event we will be doing overseas, and it will be great for us in a business sense but also a big experience for our staff. No other sport has done this, and we will be out there selling the broadcast rights and get a share of the sponsorship and operating profits as well.

"Not only is this a great event, it has Rod Laver's name on it so we really had to be involved, it is an international one. It shows we are a global business now."

More opportunities could follow, Tiley reveals.

"Other sports have already approached us [to produce their events] and we could also look at other tennis events overseas. We already produce all the tennis that happens here in Australia."

          Tailor-made broadcast feeds

Tennis Australia now has firm control over the production of the broadcast of the Australian Open, which begins on Monday in Melbourne. All up it will have produced about 800 matches this summer by the time the tournament ends, including the Open qualifying tournament – the first for a grand slam – and all the lead-up events around the country.

It also has produced events such as the Fast 4 tennis night in Sydney last week, other shows such as a fundraising night held at Melbourne Park by defending men's champion Novak Djokovic and even a sponsor event for tennis gear manufacturer Wilson that was promoted on social media and featured stars Serena Williams and Kei Nishikori.

Most importantly though, having control of the tennis broadcast – which it took from Seven West Media for the first time two years ago – means it can tailor a clean feed of every match to any of its television partners around the world.

The venture is costly, with Tennis Australia's total event expenses rising by $20 million last year – a major portion of which would be its broadcast business – but Tiley says it was a "no-brainer" to pursue and is already proving beneficial from a financial sense.

Tennis Australia derived about $88 million for broadcast rights last year, a figure that could go close to topping the $100 million mark after this year's event. It has lucrative broadcast deals with ESPN in North America and Eurosport across Europe, as well as landmark agreements with both free-to-air and pay-television networks in markets such as Japan and China.

Should a player from a particular country have a good run in the tournament, the organisation can package more broadcast materials for interested networks and presumably charge more for the rights in the process.

"We provide that clean feed, so Seven for example can just concentrate on their domestic market and then overlay it with what they want to do themselves," says Tiley. "And we are working on digital signage for the future and other features as well. We think this is a big opportunity."

          Future-proofing

Seven has up to 15 staff in the business working full-time, but that number swells to up to 300 for the Open, for which it hires production company Gearhouse to build a broadcast compound and link with the broadcasters that show the tennis all around the world.

Importantly, having control over its own broadcast means Tennis Australia can be flexible when it comes to its own broadcast future in a rapidly-changing media landscape.

The organisation was criticised when it extended its local broadcast deal with Seven in 2013 without taking the rights to tender, but when it goes back to the market in the next two years – and the word is it actually will run a competitive process this time – Tennis Australia could be negotiating with digital players like Amazon and Google as well as traditional broadcasters like Seven and its rivals.

It will have the ability to cut a deal to produce the broadcast for any of the parties, rather than relying on them to do it for tennis.

"We are future-proofing ourselves here. It is that saying of being the masters of your own destiny," says Tiley.
