    Artur Boruc [Fiorentina]

Drove Milan up the pole with his all-round anticipation. Little chance with the penalty but stopped strong efforts from Maxi Lopez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Showed his bravery when leaving his line to capture several dangerous crosses. Incontestable.

    Javier Zanetti [Inter] 5

As always intelligent and untiring. Carried his defensive colleagues for much of the match, especially when stopping Joaquin Larrivey, and blocked several dangerous crosses while also putting in a few of his own across the opposition's box. Admirable.

    Leonardo Bonucci [Juventus] 2

Like losing your way at Amen Corner before grabbing a hole in one across the water on the twelfth, the defender celebrated his headed goal as if he had just won the Augusta Open. Certainly above the cut. Green-jacketable.

    Mobido Diakitè [Lazio] 2

Like a policeman trying to direct traffic round the Colosseum, Edinson Cavani had an impossible job trying to bypass the Frenchman. Was almost unbeatable at the back and stopped the danger before it became a problem. Abradable.

    Nenad Tomovic [Lecce]

Made Erik Lamela and Fernando Gago look distinctly under par, putting both of them several strokes off the pace with his dog-leg positioning. Also added a good balance to the home defence with his clever running and deft tackling. Insurmountable.

    Stefano Mauri [Lazio]

A top performance by a player who never took his foot off the accelerator, yet always remained aware of his team-mates. Scored an Easter cracker with a brilliant overhead kick, worthy of old Long John himself. Inexorable.

    Kwadwo Asamoah [Udinese]

Put the pressure on the other Champions League chasers by opening and closing the match with two important goals. As the midfield's mainspring, he also made several important interceptions as the Ducali looked to come back. Formidable.

    Andrea Pirlo [Juventus] 8

Pirlo time again. When isn't it? Picked out team-mates with unequalled precision and purpose. His forays from deep are mind bogglingly magical and he must be on first name terms with the ball. In passing, also set up Bonucci. Incommensurable.

    Manuel Pasqual [Fiorentina]

Ran the left flank and continuously kept the hosts' defence on the back foot. Like the attempt to ban Dante's Divine Comedy, their counter attack never really got going, thanks to the north-easterner's awareness. Uncontrollable.

    Stevan Jovetic [Fiorentina] 3

Alerted the hosts to his menace with two strong attempts on goal early on before his clever run ended with an angled drive past Christian Abbiati. Worried the 'keeper several more times, then came his beautiful assist for Amauri. Indefatigable.

    David Di Michele [Lecce]

With the old wolf heading the pack, the Salentini lupi went for the visiting troupe's throat with ferocious belief and helped it's leader score twice. His first thanks to Guillermo Giacomazzi's superb assist, his second a well-taken penalty. Indomitable.

    Federico Marchetti [Lazio] 2

Lazio could have lost by a much bigger margin if not for his saves, blocks and interceptions. Was especially alert keeping out Arturo Vidal's long-range strike. However, kept his best when he denied Fabio Quagliarella. Incredible.

    Giampaolo Bellini [Atalanta]

Kept Andrea Dossena and Hugo Campagnaro quiet, forcing the latter to change roles halfway through. Consistently pressed down the right, but always aware of his defensive role and cleverly found space to slot home the second goal. Insightful.

    Francesco Acerbi [Chievo] 3

Not many people can shackle Zlatan Ibrahimovic but the tall 24-year-old coped magnificently. Never allowed himself to be knocked out of his stride and showed an intelligence and awareness beyond his experience. Solid.

    Leonardo Bonucci [Juventus] 3

It would be easier to wrestle a wild boar mad on mushrooms than to take on the new and improved Bonucci. Stopped almost everyone in their tracks, menacing when pushing forward and also played his part in the first goal. Courageous.

    Federico Peluso [Atalanta] 2

A real thorn in Napoli's side, he completely controlled the left wing, kept pushing up giving them little chance to play their normal counter-attacking game and on the odd occasion they got up any steam up he soon nullified it. Transcendental.

    Marco Rossi [Genoa] 2

Played a true captain's game leading from the middle of the park, one moment defending and then when needed assisting the attack up front. Opened the scoring after controlling Giuseppe Sculli's header and converting with a sensational half-volley. Imposing.

    Joel Obi [Inter]

Inter's super-sub got a chance of a start and showed that he can play with the big boys. Never put a foot wrong and his forward movement was outstanding. Had a big hand in the first goal and also did his bit for the defence. Excellent.

    Andrea Pirlo [Juventus] 9

He forced Lazio into a phobic embrace of sure fire futility by slowly but surely picking away at their weaknesses. In a typical flash of sublimity he picked out Pepe with a princely pass for the opener. Exalted.

    Francesco Totti [Roma] 2

Like the fake gladiators around the Colosseum, Roma's own super warrior won't go away. Always menacing he threatened to score several times before finding space at the back stick to slot home Pablo Osvaldo's superb assist. Sacred.

    Diego Milito [Inter] 4

Never skimped in his efforts to cause as many problems as possible he scored twice and possibly could have had more. The first saw him tuck home from close range, the second from a well-placed penalty. Eminent.

    Pablo Osvaldo [Roma] 3

A constant menace and scored the opener after taking out three defenders and having the presence of mind to pounce on Samir Handanovic's parry and shoot it straight back past him. Equally sublime when setting up Totti's goal. Divine.

    Samir Handanovic [Udinese] 3

As usual on top form and needed to be, denying strong efforts from Chievo's danger men Michael Bradley and Rinaldo Cruzado. Also as sharp as the talons of a fish eagle when saving Cyril Thereau's penalty.Unbeatable.

    Christian Maggio [Napoli] 3

Back on the right and Napoli back on form – can't be a coincidence and it wasn't. The wing-back forced the pace down the flank, always an outlet and almost scored twice with dynamic headers, one which was cleared off the line. Logical.

    Francesco Acerbi [Chievo] 4

Like a giant python the 24-year-old squeezed the life out of the Udinese forwards, especially in the second half. Very much in command, he never put a foot or a headed defensive clearance wrong throughout. Acerbic.

    Nicolo Cherubin [Bologna]

Looked like a veteran campaigner the way he dealt with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and never stopped running. Made his presence felt everywhere and none more than when he apparently saved an Ibra strike on the goal line. Mercuric.

    Paolo De Ceglie [Juventus] 2

Totally controlled the left flank and while he spent a lot of time in the visitors half, he never forgot his defensive duties. Sent over several crosses, setting up two goals and played with a real zest. Dynamic.

    Francesco Lodi [Catania]

Was always looking to do something different and the orchestrator of every good move. Set up several good chances and even went close himself to scoring with a couple of stunning free-kicks. Analytic.

    Arturo Vidal [Juventus] 3

The Chilean was in top form as he scored a stunning brace inside the first eight minutes. His first a glorious left-footed strike then four minutes later it was the same again but this time a right-footer. Mystical.

    Blerim Dzemaili [Napoli] 2

Always made himself available and was the link between midfield and attack. Selflessly set up Edinson Cavani for the opener and also had several attempts himself, with only the outstretched foot of the Novara 'keeper stopping him scoring. Altruistic.

    Mirko Vucinic [Juventus] 2

Destroyed Roma by pulling defenders all over to give Arturo Vidal space for the first. Then assisted Vidal's second with a gorgeous through ball before playing a part in Andrea Pirlo's goal, then back-heeling the assist for the fourth. Unstoppable.

    Edinson Cavani [Napoli] 6

Back in the scoring zone the Matador perhaps should have scored more but nonetheless worried Novara's defenders all match. Scored the first by simply being in the right place while set up Paolo Cannavaro's goal via his blockbuster rebound. Antagonistic.

    Franco Brienza [Siena] 2

Could not have done much more with two great goals and an assist. His first, a terrific free-kick into the top corner, the second saw him control the ball before a devastating finish from 15 yards out.

    Francesco Antonioli [Cesena] 2

Blameless for the goal but saved the Seahorses from drowning with top drawer stops. Amongst many blocks, his saves from Paolo De Ceglie, Alessandro Matri, then Andrea Pirlo's and Alessandro Del Piero's tremendous free-kicks were magnificent. Essential.

    Giuseppe Sculli [Genoa]

Despite being played out of position he put in an excellent shift in defence. Under pressure for most of the game but held out and made some important tackles, especially when Milan stepped up the pace in the second half. Decisive.

    Andreas Granqvist [Genoa] 2

Was on top form and despite Milan's 70 per cent possession, he kept Zlatan Ibrahimovic relatively quiet. Made a crucial goal-line clearance on Stephan El Shaarawy and continued to make important interventions in the air and on the ground throughout. Dominating.

    Lucio [Inter] 3

The Brazilian veteran showed all the qualities he is celebrated for, repelling all borders at all times with his aggressive but immaculate tackling. Never gave an inch and allowed Inter to build from the back. Authoritive.

    Michele Canini [Cagliari]

An iron man in defence and kept a tight rein on the Catania forward line, rendering them almost ineffective. Almost scored twice, his best chance coming at a corner with his header skimming the outside of the post. Imposing.

    Pablo Armero (Udinese] 4

Surprisingly taken off after an hour but before that he was a real nuisance down the left. Beautifully set up the opener, his tenth assist, after foiling Douglas Maicon and was full of adventurous running as always. Supercharged.

    Maxi Moralez [Atalanta] 3

Showed convincing evidence that his origins are from the same place as Diego Maradona's. And although denied a goal and a penalty, he eventually took revenge with a robust right-foot curler that screamed in off the post. Supernatural.

    Wesley Sneijder [Inter]

Scored a fabulous brace and worked excellently with Ricardo Alvarez menacing Udinese throughout. Was on the spot to exploit Samir Handanovic's hallucination for his first, his second came after a stunningly poised lob over the 'keeper. Imperious.

    Marek Hamsik [Napoli] 4

Played in a more advanced role and scored with a majestic half-volley from 20 yards out just five minutes in. Always kept it simple and always supportive to the attack as well as defence. Integral.

    Francesco Totti [Roma] 3

The only player who didn't deserve to be on the losing side. Always looking to cause problems he carried Roma on his broad shoulders and was personally rewarded with a crafty goal when he deflected Fernando Gago's shot. Unrivalled.

    Victor Ibarbo [Cagliari]

Only on for 30 minutes but like CERN's ProfessorEreditato he challenged Einstein's speed of light theory after setting up the second goal with his amazing acceleration over 45 yards, then scored the third after another surging run. Superluminal.

    Bogdan Lobont [Roma]

Showed his class after the break and was absolutely stupendous as Napoli fired in shots from all quarters. Really could not be blamed for either goal, but did stop almost two certain strikes from Edinson Cavani and Gokhan Inler. Dependable.

    Nicola Legrottaglie [Catania] 7

Thoroughly deserved his goal and never put a foot wrong. At 36 the former Juve defender shows no sign of his age. Always well-placed and made a couple of crucial blocks, especially one on Fabrizio Miccoli. Decisive.

    Maurizio Domizzi [Udinese] 2

The 30-year-old has been one of Italy’s most consistent defenders this season. Not only did he put in the strongest of defensive shifts, it was his pin-point cross that set up the opener. Integral

    Andrea Barzagli [Juventus] 2

You can only contain what is in front of you and the six-footer, who is playing some of his best ever football, never gave the Novara forwards the slightest of look ins. Commanding.

    Emmanuele Giaccherini [Juventus]

Never stopped running and showed no mercy. It was his precise pass that set up Marco Borriello’s header. He also had a massive hand in the final goal, while almost scoring himself. Impressive.

    Andrea Pirlo [Juventus] 10

Does he ever have a bad game? Was absolutely everywhere, set up two goals and consistently gave others several chances to score. It was his sensational free-kick that set up the opener.Imperious.

    Sebastian Giovinco [Parma] 4

As usual unlocked the defensive doors such as they were of Lecce’s. Scored from a beautifully taken free-kick from all of 25 yards that curved in over the wall and flew past an astonished Benassi. Authorative.

    Kevin Prince-Boateng [Milan] 3

The midfielder was again full of energy, bossing the middle and generally closing up any gaps. Had a great shot that nearly broke the crossbar and was forever causing trouble and never allowed Siena a moment’s respite. Crucial.

    Mirko Vucinic [Juventus] 3

Led the line magnificently and started the rout with his excellent first goal. Kept menacing and was in the right place to tap in his second. Magnificent.

    Antonio Cassano [Milan] 2

The returning hero scored the opener and made the assists for both of Ibra’s goals. Accurate and precise all match. Absolutely unstoppable, he ran the opposition ragged all game.Dominating.

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic [Milan] 10

Worked excellently with the returning Cassano and played a massive part in his opening goal. After that it was all Ibra, as the Swede scored a supersonic second, while netting the fourth goal with the game’s last kick.Imposing.

    Morgan De Sanctis [Napoli] 2

Was alert all match and needed to be at times. Especially strong when pulling off a double save, first from Josip Ilic’s shot then moments later in blocking a diving header from Abel Hernandez on the line. Integral.

    Jonathan [Parma]

Outshone his former hero Maicon on Wednesday, proving to be the greatest menace going forward from full-back. Launched several attacks down the right and almost scored when his speed took advantage of a Maicon mix-up. Imposing.

    Andrea Barzagli [Juventus] 3

Once again a top performance, not that it should be of any surprise. Showed he is one of Italy’s finest defensive talents and kept the normally effusive Luis Muriel at arm’s length. Commanding.

    Francesco Acerbi [Chievo] 5

Was awesomely solid throughout making several crucial tackles and kept the Roma forwards, especially Fabio Borini, completely quiet. His superb turn of pace saw him easily intercept anything that the visitors could throw at the home defence. Quicksilver.

    Andrea Rossi [Siena]

Presented Mattia Destro with a superb assist and continually worried Lazio down the left. Always an outlet for any counter attacking that Siena attempted and was a real pain in the neck for the hosts. Inspiring.

    Jonathan Biabiany [Parma] 2

The former Inter midfielder had the last laugh with his unstoppable speed down the wing. There was no hiding his delight at scoring after he drew Julio Cesar out before calmly rounding him to slot the ball home. Admirable.

    Gaston Ramirez [Bologna]

Always looking to set up goals and start attacks. It was his wicked left-footed curler that flew past ‘keeper Juan Carrizo to shock the home crowd. Also had another atomic left-footer stopped by Carrizo. Incontestable.

    Sebastian Giovinco [Parma] 5

At the heart of everything that Parma did and was absolutely lethal in the second half. Played a massive part in the first two goals before gliding through the middle of the defence for his strike past Julio Cesar. Unstoppable.

    Riccardo Montolivo [Fiorentina]

With the Viola missing Stevan Jovetic, the Italian stood up to the plate. Inspired the team with his organising against Novara and courageously converted the penalty. Had another effort blocked before grabbing the equaliser with a powerful curler, then almost scored a third. Formidable.

    Rodrigo Palacio [Genoa] 6

Took only 11 minutes to open the scoring as his reaction at a corner saw him coolly drive the ball home. Seemed to be the only Genoa player ready to grit his teeth, until the fabulous Bosko Jankovic arrived. Indomitable.

    Goran Pandev [Napoli]

Was everywhere and won the penalty Edinson Cavani scored before setting up Marek Hamsik’s goal with a wonderfully worked flick, right into the path of the Slovak, who then converted with ease. Also had a couple of efforts saved by Emiliano Viviano. Outstanding.

    Massimiliano Benassi [Lecce] 4

Could not be faulted for the goal and stopped some powerful efforts throughout, especially from Mattia Cassani and the double save first from Riccardo Montolivo then Manuel Pasqual’s follow up strike. Pragmatic.

    Abdoulay Konko [Lazio] 2

Was always an alert outlet for Lazio and made some great runs down the right with one in particular integral to the visitors’ opening goal. Equally as good in defence as attack, he was arguably Lazio’s best player. Vigilant.

    Walter Samuel [Inter] 3

The veteran played a massive part in the opener when he supplied Diego Milito with the perfect ball. And apart from his usual defensive vigilance he also caused a few problems in Milan’s half. Stalwart.

    Andrea Barzagli [Juventus] 4

Kept the opposition forwards quiet all game and never really broke a sweat, such was his excellent positioning and forethought. Never put a foot wrong. Prudent.

    Massimo Gobbi [Parma]

Straight back in after suspension, the 31-year-old spent as much time in the Siena half as he did in his own. Full of energy and running he was always a ready conduit down the left flank when Parma attacked. Lively.

    Marco Rigoni [Novara] 4

Man of the Match. Scored a splendid hat-trick and gave Cesena’s Steve Von Bergen not so much a lesson in how to score, but a 90 minute seminar on how to lose a marker and make him pay. Impressive.

    Alessandro Diamanti [Bologna] 2

A classy performance, with some precise distribution from the centre of the park. Scored a stunning left-footer from 12 yards, after some clever build up work between Archimede Morleo and Robert Acquafresca. Helped out his defence when needed. Elegant.

    Sebastian Giovinco [Parma] 6

Another top performance by the Gialloblu’s No 10, who was involved in everything and capped it all off with a right footed half-volley wonder goal, that absolutely flew into the top corner from outside the area. Stylish.

    Diego Milito [Inter] 5

A live wire throughout and opened the scoring after finding space to tap in the first of his hat-trick of goals. Then won and scored his first penalty before coolly converting his second, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance on either of them. Stunning.

    Antonio Di Natale [Udinese] 2

Another stunning display of craft and guile by the veteran. Hit the post twice before scoring from a free kick that went on a wicked, curving trajectory before squeezing between Seb Frey and the upright. Spectacular.

    Fabrizio Miccoli [Palermo] 5

Palermo’s pocket battleship scored a tremendous hat-trick and could have scored three more. And while his first two goals were well-taken, his third was an awesome stunner as he cleverly controlled the ball before volleying it home. Brobdignagian.

    Albano Bizzarri [Lazio] 2

Kept Lazio in the game with two superb blocks on Diego Milito efforts, while his brilliant finger-tip save from Fredy Guarin’s screamer was a game-changer. Little chance with the penalty but never put a foot wrong. Show-stopping.

    Douglas Maicon [Inter] 3

Forever causing problems for Lazio with his full-blooded runs yet never neglected defensive duties. Worked well swapping roles with Javier Zanetti and won the penalty. Always in control and didn’t deserve to be on losing side. Peremptory.

    Gabriel Paletta [Parma]

Another strong performance from the always improving Argentinean defender. He has played a central role in Parma’s revival and was particularly strong at set pieces against Bologna. Spoilt Marco Di Vaio’s final farewell. Indisputable.

    Giorgio Chiellini [Juventus] 4

Playing in his favoured position in the centre of the defence Chiello was, as always, aware of the opposition forwards’ runs. He made several fundamental interceptions on the ground and especially in the air, which were all crystallised in one crucial block on Carlos Carmona. Incontrovertible

    Santiago Garcia [Novara]

The young Argentinean was a thorn in Milan’s side on the left and was rewarded when he was first to the ball to slot home from 10 yards. Also kept Alberto Aquilani and Rino Gattuso in check. Determined.

    Mario Santana [Cesena]

Continually threatened down the right and set up the opener with a clever dribble past two defenders. Tested Bogdan Lobont several times before eventually beating the Roma ‘keeper from a tight angle at the death. Compelling.

    Antonio Candreva [Lazio] 2

Worked tirelessly to keep Lazio in the game and was the instigator of most of their dangerous moments. Worried Inter’s ‘keeper on many occasions before striking home with a powerful finish for the second crucial goal. Irrefragable.

    Sebastian Giovinco [Parma] 7

Like a ballerina amongst Sumo wrestlers he radiated supine balance as he pirouetted through the opposition defence. After several goal attempts himself, one which was saved on the line by the ‘keeper, he set up the perfect winner. Magisterial.

    Andrea Dossena [Napoli]

Controlled a textbook pass from the magical Marek Hamsik for his first goal and continued causing problems before scoring his second with a simple tap-in after being in the right place at the right time. Domineering.

    Alessandro Del Piero [Juventus] 2

It was written in the Gospel of Il Pinturicchio that he would score and after swapping balls with Emanuele Giaccherini he did just that, firing home from 15 yards. Also created several chances before leaving to a standing ovation. Circumstantiated.

    Filippo Inzaghi [Milan]

It was another SuperPippo day as he had several strong attempts on goal before controlling a gorgeous pass from another retiree Clarence Seedorf, to smack home a tremendous right-footed half-volley, another perfect goal for the poacher in chief. Extraordinaire.
