    Zeljko Brkic [Siena]

Kept a clean sheet with a series of saves including pure reaction from two Jovetic screamers, while also blocking Behrami and foiling Gamberini's header. Not quite Buffon, but a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Commanding.

    Aleandro Rosi [Roma]

Played opposite Taddei and like him ruled the flank on the right. Pushed menacingly into Bologna's area on several occasions while showing a lot of determination and is quickly growing out of his salad days. Coetaneous.

    Bostjan Cesar [Chievo]

Gave Lazio short shrift from the off with two shots rattling the woodwork, while a finger-tip save stopped his header from going in. Meanwhile, he was absolutely crucial at the back never allowing Cisse or Hernanes to shine whatsoever. Exigent.

    Rodrigo Taddei [Roma] 2

Some have greatness thrust upon them and he is reinventing himself as a top terzino. Opened the scoring with a stunning volley from the edge of the box and continually prompted down the flank. Propagative.

    Walter Gargano [Napoli]

The Uruguayan primed the Partenopei engine to perfection and was the devil incarnate to the visitors, controlling the midfield imperiously. Scored a brilliant goal with a wonderfully curved ball that foiled Frey. Autocratic.

    Marek Hamsik [Napoli] 2

Such stuff as dreams are made on. Spread the ball around intelligently with his elegant cool. His quick thinking saw him capitalise on the rebound from Granqvist to slam in the second goal, while he also set up Gargano's goal with a princely pull-back. Stupefying.

    Sergio Almiron [Catania] 2

Not a foregone conclusion as the Argentinian refused to allow his team to buckle and equalised following Modesto's mistake. Even as Parma went two ahead his head never went down and he played a big part in the eventual draw. Exceptional.

    Yuto Nagatomo [Inter]

The Japanese was Lecce's crack of doom and really menaced on the wing. Excelled in the second half when two fabulous solo runs down the left ended with him putting top-class passes in for Cambiasso then Alvarez's goal. Prodigious.

    Guido Marilungo [Atalanta]

It was once more into the breach as Coach Colantuono's faith in Marilungo's ability to play just behind Denis was rewarded with two great goals. His Man of the Match performance saw him even outshine his teammate Denis. Complementary.

    Edinson Cavani [Napoli] 3

The game is afoot again as the Matador cleverly exploited Genoa's offside trap for his first, while simply looping the ball over Frey's head for number two. Popped up everywhere and even had the luxury of missing two sitters. Phenomenal.

    Pablo Osvaldo [Roma] 2

With Roma having over 70 per cent of the possession the Argentinian earned his pound of flesh and unfailingly exploited it to perfection. Scored his seventh goal of the season with a cracking volley that burned Gillet's glove. Irrepressible.

    Sebastien Frey [Genoa] 2

Perhaps could have saved Ibarbo's goal, but faultless for the other two. Made some stunning interceptions to keep the score down, including finger tip saves from Cossu and Larrivey while bravely throwing himself at Ibarbo's feet for another block. Commanding.

    Dusan Basta [Udinese] 3

A sensational performance and never allowed Cesena a look down the right. Had the confidence to move upfield and was rewarded with one of the goals of the day, a dipping 40-yard bullet without almost any back-lift. Dazzling.

    Thiago Silva [Milan] 3

If anyone else wins the defender of the year award it will be a fallacy. Ultra cool and super elegant, he led the back line like the true professional he is and never once put a foot wrong. Dominant.

    Andrea Esposito [Lecce]

The on loan Genoa defender had the making of Pepe and won almost everything in the air. Also attacked down the left and made sure the visitors had to work very hard for their narrow victory. Determined.

    Mariano de Almeida Angelo [Siena]

The Brazilian midfielder played a lot deeper than usual, but helped keep Klose on a short lead with his solid defending and precise tackling. Decisive

    Ricky Alvarez [Inter] 2

Stroked the ball round perfectly, repaying Ranieri's faith better than the merchandise of silver. It was his awesome cross that set up Milito's first and everything good about Inter went through him. Passed Parma's defenders with elegant ease. Proverbial.

    Andrea Cossu [Cagliari] 2

The bandiera won a penalty and set up Ibarbo's goal on a superb counter-attack. Tested the Genoa defenders throughout and had several strong shots on target. Inspired his teammates with his absolute quality with every touch. Splendid.

    Walter Gargano [Napoli] 2

An ultra solid performance by the Uruguayan and it was his dashing run to the touch-line to pull back for Pandev's first goal, which was an almost carbon copy of an earlier attempt that Benussi saved. Integral.

    Mattia Destro [Siena]

The U-21 star scored twice, as well as having a highly skilful goal from an even better build up disallowed. His first saw him bury the ball into the far corner, while his second came via a wonderful header. Defining.

    Diego Milito [Inter]

Why does the sun come up? Or a blue moon sink? Who knows? What we do know is that 'The Prince' was a King with two majestic goals and regal assists. Immortal.

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic [Milan] 6

Ran the game throughout with his imperious Eric Cantona-like grace and intelligence. Slammed an unstoppable penalty, then with clever control got to the line to cross the perfect ball for Boateng to knock home. Influential.

    Sebastien Frey [Genoa] 3

Outstanding performance and won the points for Genoa. Twice stopped screamers from Floro Flores and made several other outstanding saves, including one from Di Natale, while his one-handed reaction from Pinzi was priceless. Helpless on both goals. Resplendent.

    Andreas Granqvist [Genoa]

The athletic Swede imposed himself everywhere and invariably came off best. Patrolled the right flank as a defender, but was up front when his superb reaction to Jankovic's rebound saw him score the vital equaliser. Quicksilver.

    Walter Samuel [Inter]

The Argentine played his usual all-action game with determination by the bucketful. Never gave the Milan forwards an inch and was like a snapping dragon when it came to closing them down. Towering.

    Thiago Silva [Milan] 4

One of the few Rossoneri who could hold his head up and kept the Inter forwards restricted for most of the game. Tried his best to inspire by pushing up but let down by his teammates. Forceful.

    Javier Zanetti [Inter]

Difficult to believe he was the oldest on the pitch the way he burnt Zambrotta and anyone else he came into contact with. Never stopped pushing and his quick thinking set up Milito with a perfect pass. Astounding.

    Andrea Cossu [Cagliari] 3

Was troubled by Pirlo at times, but eventually won through. Saved his best for the second half while also scoring the crucial equaliser with a tremendous left-footer that screamed past a bemused Buffon. Exhilarating.

    Gaby Mundingayi [Bologna]

An uncompromising performance from the Belgian international who had a firm grip on the midfield action and shackled Hamsik throughout. Simply soaked up the pressure with some crucial tackling and intelligent running. Physical.

    Saphir Taider [Bologna]

The French U-21 star made his debut with a more than commendable performance and worried Napoli every time he got the ball. Showed excellent technique and never faltered while helping out in defence and attack. Dauntless.

    Bosko Jankovic [Genoa]

Was at the heart of all the action and forced the equaliser after Handanovic could only parry the ball for Granqvist to slot home. However, a minute later the 'keeper failed to stop the midfielder’s next stupendous volley. Radiant.

    Adrian Mutu [Cesena] 3

The Romanian was red-hot, scored twice and had a massive hand in the third. His first came from a rebound, his second a smartly-taken penalty while his dangerous run and cross forced the own goal. Incandescent.

    Sebastian Giovinco [Parma] 3

Involved in all the best moves and set up the first two goals with dynamic crosses. Always on the move the Ant scurried around, found space in the last few seconds and converted Palladino's neat pass. Atomic.

    Gianluca Pegolo [Siena]

Siena's second choice sentinel was superb, making five or six sensational saves, including blocking two Cavani thunderbolts and his penalty. With Napoli pushing for a winner he saved Pandev's screamer right on the line, right on time. Superlative.

    Alessandro Gamberini [Fiorentina] 3

Getting back to his best and quietly efficient in the tackle. Helped drum Larrivey right out the game and also made a crucial challenge on the relatively dangerous Nainggolan and was one of the reasons along with Boruc for the clean sheet. Solid.

    Giorgio Chiellini [Juventus] 2

Commanded the centre of defence and kept Denis quiet while making some absolutely decisive blocks. Always ready to snuff out danger, his dive to head away a menacing Schelotto cross was outstanding and the template for several other aerial encounters. Dominant.

    Pablo Armero [Udinese] 3

Controlled the left flank and forced the first goal in off Izco after a fine run. Kept pressing and dodged two defenders before pulling back the perfect pass for Di Natale to volley home the second. Dynamic.

    Esteban Cambiasso [Inter] 2

Bossed the midfield allowing Inter's more creative players to do their business while stopping Lazio's versions – Hernanes, Ledesma, Gonzalez and later Matuzalem – from doing theirs. His amazing engine keeps powering Inter further and further up the table. Galvanizing.

    Andrea Pirlo [Juventus] 3

Still one of Italy's best players and showed his sublime ability with some sumptuous service, to set up several attacks. Always alert to the half chance, it was his extremely well-crafted through ball that instigated Lichtsteiner's opener. Transcendent.

    Massimo Donati [Palermo]

Although his first game, it looked like he had played in Rosanero all his life. Popped up everywhere. Gave Genoa a hard time in midfield and worked magnificently with the forwards, especially Miccoli. Inspired.

    Francesco Totti [Roma]

Scored his 210th League goal almost immediately with an angled drive. A crisp volley saw number 211 buried. Also set up the third and fourth goals. Majestic.

    Fabio Borini [Roma]

The former Chelsea youngster was here, there and everywhere and perfectly placed to slip his goal in from a few yards out. Formed a great partnership with Totti and definitely a star for the future. Untiring.

    Fabrizio Miccoli [Palermo] 2

Had a hand in three goals as well also scoring his own. Assisted for Budan and Mantovani's goals and then set up Migliaccio with a stunning free kick. In between he slipped around Frey for number four. Unstoppable.

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic [Milan] 7

The Swede was simply mind-blowing and after three blocked killer shots he finally scored with a nonchalant volley past Ujkani. His second saw his clever flick surprising the defence as he half turned before using his heel. Sublime.

    Massimiliano Benassi [Lecce] 3

The Lone Ranger was in jaw-dropping form with some seemingly nailed on goals blocked, pushed out and tipped over the bar. At his very best he palmed Walter Samuel’s header and twice pulled off planet-stopping saves to prevent Giampaolo Pazzini scoring. Buffon-like.

    Massimo Oddo [Lecce]

The veteran Milanista was as gameas a banty rooster but had a tough job closing down Diego Milito and Pazzini yet withstood the pressure. Got down the right flank and put in the perfect cross for Guillermo Giacomazzi's goal. Popescu-like.

    Andrea Barzagli [Juventus]

Fought like a cocky coyote to keep the Udinese forwards, especially Almen Abdi, well away from the spoils. Made several crucial blocks including a superb tackle on Antonio Di Natale and was a defensive rock. Ferrara-like.

    Gabriel Heinze [Roma]

Showed age has not dulled his anticipation as he dry gulched several dangerous moves before they could develop any further. Kept pushing forward and made some gorgeous passes both short and long. Cafu-like.

    Ezequiel Matias Schelotto [Atalanta] 3

Made the right flank his own and was unstoppable with constant running, the odd mazy dribble and a couple of serious attempts on goal. Sent over several dangerous crosses, one of which forced Marco Rossi's own goal. Lentini-like.

    Andrea Pirlo [Juventus] 4

A top performance and even got off a couple of strikes. Intelligent running on and off the ball, he played his part in the midfield tussle and pushed it in Juve's direction when it could have gone either way. Pirlo-like.

    Hernanes [Lazio] 2

Was at the heart of all of Lazio's best moves and someone to ride the river with. Scored the opener at the back post and would have scored another if not for 'keeper Stefano Sorrentino bravely diving at his feet. Gazza-like.

    Guillermo Giacomazzi [Lecce]

Held his own in a crowded midfield and had to fight like a Kilkenny Cat at times but crowned a top display when he cleverly controlled Oddo's cross to power the ball past Julio Cesar. Conte-like.

    Alessandro Matri [Juventus] 3

It's hard to beat Samir Handanovic but Mitra-Matri performed like a greased machine-gun to score twice. He pounced like a vulture for the first, while his control and spin a la Zidane, saw him slot home his second. Vialli-like.

    Miroslav Klose [Lazio] 6

The Man of the Match popped up everywhere, even into midfield to get the ball. He may be 33 but twice made a shave tail out of Marco Andreolli, 10 years his junior, to score two superb goals. Signori-like.

    Rodrigo Palacio [Genoa] 4

Bought the ticket and took the ride twice, thanks to two fabulous assists from the excellent Alberto Gilardino. His first was an unstoppable Exocet into the top corner while his second was a well placed shot from an angle. Skuhravy-like.

    Francesco Antonioli [Cesena]

Napoli would have won if not for several crucial blocks by the 41-year-old, which included two fabulous saves from Edinson Cavani plus a Miguel Britos strike. However, tipping Goran Pandev's curving thunderbolt round the post beat them all. Integral.

    Abdoulay Konko [Lazio]

The former Juve reject rubbed out Robinho and played his part in keeping his old employees top. Also found space to test Christian Abbiati and was involved in the build up to the opener. Influential.

    Steve Von Bergen [Cesena] 2

The Swiss international was the glue in the centre of the defence that the hosts came unstuck on. His untiring efforts saw him make several important tackles, especially essential when robbing Pandev. Instructive.

    Francesco Acerbi [Chievo]

Made his first start and showed lots of promise forcing the Novara front line to fight for every ball. Complemented the more experienced Marco Andreolli excellently and menaced the home defence at set pieces. Intelligent.

    Boukary Drame [Chievo]

Controlled the left side in both defence and attack, limiting the visitors to playing mostly through the middle. Caused problems with his runs and crosses and set up Sergio Pellissier with an excellent ball. Incursive.

    Javier Zanetti [Inter] 2

Another seminal serial in the soap opera that the Argentine stars in every week. Driving forward at every opportunity, he played in several roles during the course of the game and deserved an Oscar in everyone. Inspirational.

    Hernanes [Lazio] 3

Once again the Brazilian maestro ran the show and was a prickly menace throughout, showering shots in from everywhere. Finally got his just rewards after controlling Tommaso Rocchi's flick before foiling Alessandro Nesta to slot home from an angle. Imaginative.

    Senad Lulic [Lazio] 2

Always ready to take the pressure off with his menacing runs down the left. Anticipating Rocchi's superb positioning for the second goal, he raced to the by-line and crossed a perfect ball for the striker to whip home. Incisive.

    Thiago Ribeiro [Cagliari]

Popped up everywhere and doubled his strike rate with two explosive goals. Cutting in from the left he detonated a cruise-missile past Maarten Stekelenburg, while his torpedo-like trajectile went in off the bar for his second. Incendiary.

    Diego Milito [Inter] 2

Dynamic Diego was unstoppable, scoring in the first half then three inside 15 magical minutes in the second. Indeed the athletic Argentine could have scored another three with two ruled out and a narrow miss for a third. Illustrious.

    Fabrizio Miccoli [Palermo] 3

A one-man show. First set up Mantovani then scored after a fabulous run, following that up with a powerful, diving header before giving Julio Cesar no chance with a bullet left-footer for his hat-trick. Ingenious.

    Gianluca Pegolo [Siena] 2

A commanding performance with stops, blocks and anticipation that denied Juve at every turn. Made outstanding saves from Stephan Lichtsteiner and Alessandro Matri, but even those were shaded when he palmed Andrea Pirlo's fierce free-kick to safety. Astounding.

    Juan [Roma] 2

The Brazilian made a couple of crucial tackles, but also found time to forage up field to head home Francesco Totti's free-kick. Also assisted Fabio Borini's second goal with a perfect pass. Athletic.

    Paolo Cannavaro [Napoli] 2

Frustrated Milan with his intelligent interceptions, while one particular clearing header set up a speedy counter attack. Made several decisive challenges on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, especially a well-timed tackle on a real scoring opportunity. Awesome.

    Luca Rossettini [Siena]

Helped stop a run of five away defeats with his closing down, crowding out and general hounding of Matri and Vucinic. Never giving an inch, he inspired his side to a well-deserved share of the points. Amazing.

    Mattia Cassani [Fiorentina]

Won the battle on the right flank and put in several dangerous crosses. Yet ironically it was Manuel Pasqual's superb cross from the left, that saw him head past Samir Handanovic for his first Viola goal. Ambrosial.

    Daniele De Rossi [Roma] 5

Roma could move up field with freedom thanks to Captain Futuro's dependability in front of the back four. In defence or attack with his precise passes and penetrating perception, alongside the excellent Miralem Pjanic, he cut Inter to pieces. Astute.

    Andrea Pirlo [Juventus] 5

Created the tempo but let down on several occasions by the lack of awareness of his colleagues. Seemed to be individually carrying the fight to Siena and looks like he can talk to the ball. Articulate.

    Bosko Jankovic [Genoa] 2

A real thorn in Lazio's side as his judicious presence in a more forward role resulted in two goals and an assist. His first rebounded off Federico Marchetti, while his second was a meticulously angled shot into the far corner. Awe-inspiring.

    Maximiliano Moralez [Atalanta] 2

Fought against the flow down the left and was finally rewarded when he finished off a fine move with a stealthy run that saw him slide home a pin point pass from Manolo Gabbiadini. Admirable.

    Fabio Borini [Roma] 2

Never stopped looking to make a run or make space and outfoxed Walter Samuel to score his first. Then controlled a fine pass from Juan, before holding off Lucio, to slam another bullet past Julio Cesar. Astonishing.

    Rodrigo Palacio [Genoa]
    5

Another fine performance from the Argentine. His Mancini/Zola-like back heel flick from outside the six-yard box saw the ball loop over a mesmerized Marchetti into the goal and was worth the entrance fee alone. Astral.

    Samir Ujkani [Novara] 2

Set the standard with a flying dive to palm away Wesley Sneijder's thunderbolt and from then onwards could not be beaten. Made several utterly crucial interventions, especially right on time, with a brave save from Giampaolo Pazzini. Commanding.

    Gianluca Grava [Napoli]

Totally solid in his first full League game for over a year and anticipated every twist or turn from the visitors. Took over the captain's armband and leadership duties with a defensive Man of the Match display. Influential.

    Andrea Lisuzzo [Novara]

A commanding performance from a player who has been a rock-like figure through two promotions and now for 90 minutes against Inter at San Siro. Was in total sync with Centuroni as they foiled everything thrown at them. Dominating.

    Matteo Centuroni [Novara]

Totally uncompromising and gave absolutely no quarter to the Inter forward line be it Diego Milito, Diego Forlan or Pazzini. Went into every tackle as if his family's life depended on it. Determined.

    Cristiano Del Grosso [Siena]

The 28-year-old's never say die attitude was just too much for the visitors and he dominated the left, neutralising any Roma attacks with his timely interceptions and awareness. Domineering.

    Massimo Ambrosini [Milan]

A true captain's performance with real composure on the ball as he led the fightback. Won the battle in midfield with his sheer determination when the match looked like slipping way from the Rossoneri. Tigerish.

    Hernanes [Lazio] 4

The Brazilian once again deserved Man of the Match status as he set up several chances. Scored the first of the fightback triple with an unstoppable bullet of a shot that screamed past Francesco Antonioli. Cultivated.

    Pablo Barrientos [Catania]

El Pitu strikes again and could have scored another brace, such was his drive and determination. The Argentine was in the right place to snap up a poor clearance, then fired home his second from a few yards out. Persistent.

    Libor Kozak [Lazio]

Only on for the second half, but hunted down the visitors like a lion seeks out a wounded zebra. Made sure of the points after swooping like an eagle on to a rebound to slot home the winner. Cobra-like.

    Stephan El Shaarawy [Milan]

Received much better service in the second half and continually probed Udinese's back line, shooting on sight. Helped set up the first and his solid right footer flew past the flailing outstretched hands of the 'keeper for the second. Burgeoning.

    Mauricio Pinilla [Cagliari]

The Chilean was a real problem for his former teammates, pouncing like a mongoose on a snake to slide home the first goal. Also set up the second as Daniele Dessena tapped in the rebound from his devastating free-kick. Consummate.

    Jean-Francois Gillet [Bologna] 2

Snuffed out the Inter strikers all game, making sensational reaction saves with his legs from Douglas Maicon's header and Diego Forlan's strike. Rounded off a dynamic display by brilliantly palming away Andrea Ranocchia's header off the line. Indispensable.

    Marco Andreolli [Chievo]

A solid showing by the 6ft 3 former Azzurrini central defender. He was an unmoveable rock in the middle and had Rodrigo Palacio firmly in his pocket throughout. Solid.

    Matias Silvestre [Palermo]

Stood firm in the way of Lazio's forwards and made sure they made no headway, especially at corners. Worked hard and found space from Fabrizio Miccoli's free-kick to head home from six yards. Integral.

    Paolo Cannavaro [Napoli] 3

Back again where he belongs as captain, commanding the defence and inspiring those around him. Protected his goalkeeper with a couple of vital blocks but in general halted any threat before it got started. Cultivated.

    Juan Guillermo Cuadrado [Lecce] 3

Caused considerable danger all match with his speed of movement and thought down the right flank. Scored after a magical 50 yard solo run that saw him chip the 'keeper with consummate ease. Delightful.

    Diego Perez [Bologna]

Came out best in midfield against Esteban Cambiasso and with his all-powerful interceptions never allowed Inter to get a real foothold. It was his perfect assist that set up Marco Di Vaio for the opener. Cauterising.

    Urby Emanuelson [Milan]

No sympathy from the devil here and, just behind the front two, the Dutchman was unmerciful in his prompting and prodding. Set up several attempts, while shooting on sight himself and scored with a dynamite long-range effort. Dominant.

    Andrea Pirlo [Juventus] 6

Another top performance saw him score from a trademark free-kick. Never stopped shooting, crossing and putting set-pieces into danger areas, also set up Giorgio Chiellini's goal with another free kick and had a massive hand in the third. Immaculate.

    Edinson Cavani [Napoli] 4

The Three Tenors were singing off the same sheet as Lavezzi's ball from Hamsik set up the Matador for his first. His second left Artur Boruc with no chance as his angled shot flew past the goalkeeper. Triquetrous.

    Ezequiel Lavezzi [Napoli] 4

Never stopped running, probing and was superb at corners and free-kicks putting Fiorentina under pressure every time. Finally got his just rewards after dodging some rough-house tactics to finish a fine run with a dynamic shot past Boruc. Triumphant.

    Marco Di Vaio [Bologna] 2

The veteran was at it again defending and attacking from the front. Opened the scoring with a coolly taken shot past Julio Cesar, then a minute later slotted home number two from an angle. Pungent.

    Julio Cesar [Inter]

On the ball from the start and pulled off the save of the week by tipping Dzemaili's screamer away. Could do nothing about Lavezzi's goal, but if not for him Inter could have been even more embarrassed. Alert.

    Giorgio Chiellini [Juventus] 3

Was a true rock at the back, making some crucial interventions including stopping Mark Van Bommel. Also attacked down the right flank and set up Fabio Quagliarella only for the striker to fluff it. Solid.

    Luca Rossettini [Siena] 2

Never allowed the Palermo forwards any headway and always ready to halt any menace that looked like progressing. Immediately after the restart he ran into space and walloped home Franco Brienza's free kick with an unstoppable strike. Invulnerable.

    Gugliemo Stendardo [Atalanta]

The 30-year-old centre back used every inch of his 6ft 3 inches to win every aerial duel. Kept the Roma forward line quiet and give the midfield the confidence to push forward and supply their own forward line. Organised.

    Giovanni Marchese [Catania]

Played further up field than his normally defensive role allows and his swashbuckling darts down the left wing caused real problems for Novara. Topped a superb performance with a rocket-launched, volleyed goal from outside the box. Significant.

    Dusan Basta [Udinese] 4

The Serbian bombed down the right the whole match and was rewarded as he dribbled past two defenders before chipping the goalkeeper. Also laid back a gorgeous pass for Antonio Flores to rifle home the third goal. Exciting.

    Blerim Dzmaili [Napoli]

The Swiss playmaker was a menace throughout and had several attempts on target. He was forever setting up attacks and laid on the perfect assist for Lavezzi with an absolutely brilliant through ball. Irresistible.

    Juan Zuniga [Napoli] 4

Always on the go and ran the unfortunate Marco Davide Faraoni ragged. Although forever advancing down the left he never once neglected his defensive duties, which were more to the fore in the second half. Judicious.

    Ezequiel Lavezzi [Napoli] 5

Was all over the Inter defence and if not for Cesar he would have scored more. A truly world-class performance which was only topped by his stupendous goal that curved through the air into the net. Scintillating.

    German Denis [Atalanta] 6

710 minutes after his last goal, like Bergamo buses the Tank's goals all came at once. Apart from his sensational hat-trick he also laid on Guido Marilungo's goal as Roma's defence simply had no answer to him. Unstoppable.

    Guido Marilungo [Atalanta] 2

The youngster worked excellently with Denis and, after narrowly missing one goal, where he had drifted past two Roma defenders, he scored the opener after nonchalantly slipping the ball past the on-rushing Maarten Stekelenburg. Also laid on two assists. Effulgent.

    Stefano Sorrentino [Chievo]

Man of the Match and won a point for the visitors with some exceptional saves from start to finish, especially three in the second half, including the brilliant stop from Andrea Pirlo in stoppages. Significant.

    Ignazio Abate [Milan] 2

Started menacing down the right from the kick-off with some early dangerous crosses and unafraid to try several shots of his own. Made a decisive block on a dangerous Andrea Mantovani strike and also kept Fabrizio Miccoli quiet. Insistent.

    Thiago Silva [Milan] 5

Almost scored a goal with a fabulous free-kick and was imperious as usual in defence. Never gave anything away and put the icing on the cake with a tremendous header for the fourth goal. Commanding.

    Matija Nastasic[Fiorentina]

It's all happening for the young Serbian after making his international debut last week he now scores his first goal in his first season with the Viola. A top performance and was always one step ahead, keeping the Cesena forwards quiet for long periods. Incinerating.

    Boukary Drame [Chievo]

The French youngster has a mind of his own at times, but could not be stopped and caused Stephan Lichtsteiner some serious problems. Got forward to score the crucial equaliser when his angled drive beat Gianluigi Buffon. Compelling.

    Michael Bradley [Chievo]

Controlled the midfield and was more Pirlo than Andrea in this game with his distribution and influence. Yet he is more robust than his opposite number, shown by his game defining tackle on a counter-attacking Mirko Vucinic. Decisive.

    Antonio Nocerino [Milan] 6

Took us back to those heady days of Fabio Capello's Milan when beyond the sum of individual talent there was an over-riding sense of players who were educated to trust in their own ability to make a significant contribution. Devastating.

    Sergio Almiron [Catania] 3

Undoubtedly Man of the Match and had the Inter midfield at his mercy running through and cutting them to pieces with a metaphorical sword the whole game. Excellent.

    Franco Brienza [Siena]

Reminds you of a time when footballers thought tattoos were for sissies, wore smart haircuts and their only thought was for the good of the team. Worked hard and almost scored himself with an angled drive from 25 yards. Convincing.

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic [Milan] 8

Never one to be inured by achievement, after scoring one the Swede went on to to score another two fabulous goals and would probably have netted another hat-trick if not for some fine goalkeeping from Viviano.Tormenting.

    Fabio Borini [Roma] 3

The youngster did not deserve to be on the losing side and put much more into it than his comparative inexperience would suggest he possesses. Scored from an awkward position which showed his determination to equalise. Spirited.

    Sebastien Frey [Genoa] 4

Made several crucial saves including two from Claudio Marchisio, one which was an Exocet that he palmed out from under the bar. Also stopped blockbusters from Pepe and Andrea Pirlo to keep his first clean sheet for 15 games. Praiseworthy.

    Ignazio Abate [Milan] 3

Controlled the right flank and pushed forward at every opportunity forcing the pace all match. Played more like a winger than a defender, but never forgot his real role while causing trouble every time he crossed the half-way line. Perspicacious.

    Paolo Cannavaro [Napoli]
    4

So efficient that his tremendous displays every week have started to become accepted as normal, but the captain is never complacent. Perhaps could have stopped one goal but showed his versatility with a perfect header of his own. Priceless.

    Walter Samuel [Inter] 2

Back to his wall-like self and closed down the host's strike force before they had a chance to do any damage. Displayed all his old skills when climbing above Chievo's defence to head home from a corner. Psychic.

    Daniel Portanova [Bologna] 2

Kept the normally lively Miroslav Klose quiet, including an early crucial block. Authoritative in the air then on the ground displaying a striker's predatory instinct when knocking in a rebound from the 'keeper. Pernicious.

    Jose Angel [Roma]

The Spanish terzino was forever pushing down the left flank, getting beyond the Palermo defenders, sending over several smart crosses and keeping his opposite number on the back foot with his anticipation and awareness. Precise.

    Walter Gargano [Napoli] 3

Moved with the freedom of an eagle and alongside Hamsik worked magic in midfield. Showed a perfect example of his all-round awareness by being in exactly the right spot to slot home Edinson Cavani's superb assist. Prestidigitating.

    Marek Hamsik [Napoli] 3

Combined defence splitting runs with an attacking prowess and opened the scoring by easily spinning past Daniele Conti, before unleashing a guided missile of a shot into the bottom right hand corner from 25 yards. Phenomenal.

    Alessandro Diamanti [Bologna]

At the heart of everything and menaced unmercifully with shots, free-kicks, then exemplified his awareness with a cracking goal. Also won the corner for the first and his free-kick helped Rene Krhin score the third. Poised.

    Ezequiel Lavezzi [Napoli] 6

Scored one, had two assists and was literally everywhere. Set up Cannavaro from a dynamic free-kick. Then forced the own goal, while he also earned and coolly converted a penalty which almost burst the net. Peerless.

    Joaquin Larrivey [Cagliari]

The Argentine certainly lived up to his nickname of El Bati with a stunning Gigi Riva-like hat-trick of headers. Mobile and threatening and got into several menacing positions and may have scored more if not for Cannavaro. Prodigious.

    Samir Handanovic [Udinese] 2

Napoli may have won if not for the Slovenian who kept out Cavani's penalty, while also smothering shots from Gargano, Pandev and Dzemaili. Under constant pressure late on but still foiled Inler and Zuniga. Cauterising.

    Javier Zanetti [Inter] 3

Was Inter's best player and owned the right flank making the visitors' defence look as pathetic as a Gary Neville commentary. Pity his teammates failed to equal his competitive and defensive integrity. Reluscent.

    Marco Andreolli [Chievo] 2

His shrewdness at set pieces, like a Verona restaurateur declaring his net-income, proved decisive. Then as the Lance to Sergio Pellissier's Speed, he inadvertently deflected home the opener. Enlightening.

    Nicola Legrottaglie [Catania] 5

Like Barcelona's unpaid tax bill, he has played a massive part in the club's recent success. Made Miroslav Klose look like a German Fernando Torres and executed several crucial blocks before volleying home the winner. Irradiating.

    Giovanni Pasquale [Udinese]

Played with considerable subtlety and technique and, like an Italian businessman probed by the finance police about his Ferrari, was quick off the mark when moving from defence to attack. Scorching.

    Andrea Pirlo [Juventus] 7

Wins the respect of his teammates by understanding football's logistics and consequently inspires them to operate at optimum levels. Finished off a great pass from Vucinic to score with a luscious lob over Artur Boruc. Incandescent.

    Urby Emanuelson [Milan]

Sometimes wasteful and should have scored three, but his fabulous 45-yard solo slalom into the Parma goal mouth to slot home past Antonio Mirante was as sensational as Silvio Berlusconi's not guilty verdict. Also forced the penalty. Effulgent.

    Marco Rigoni [Novara] 3

Showed his intent with a fabulous free-kick that hit the woodwork. Dictated the pace and course of the gameas well as scoring a powerful goal from Andrea Caracciolo's perfect pass. Illuminating.

    Mauricio Pinilla [Cagliari] 2

Was a constant menace and gave an early warning with a sensational bicycle kick. Cesena failed to take heed and like a Sardinian bandit pursuing a vendetta, Pinilla punished them with a killer hat-trick. Coruscating.

    Edinson Cavani [Napoli] 5

Missed a penalty but made up for it with an exquisite free-kick, then minutes later pounced like a chancer filling in a false invalidity claim, to squeeze the ball under Handanovic for the equaliser. Scintillating.

    Mirko Vucinic [Juventus]

The Montenegrin was in red-hot form, scoring with a fabulous Beckham-like strike from outside the box. Also had several other attempts and assisted twice with consummately controlled passes. Incinerating.

    Maarten Stekelenburg [Roma] 2

Like a tourist trying to access Rome's Via Condotti designer shops, it was almost impossible to get past the Dutchman’s door. His finger-tip save from Sulley Muntari was just one of nine from 11 shots on target. Grandioso.

    Martin Caceres [Juventus]

Was a constant problem down the right, putting in several dangerous crosses while having one or two attempts himself. The versatile Uruguayan eventually scored the opener with a perfectly placed header. Accelerando.

    Francesco Acerbi [Chievo] 2

Was not too aware of his goal but showed his class with a crucial sliding tackle on Mattia Destro and set the scene throughout the game with his high-energy approach.Counterpoint.

    Federico Fernandez [Napoli]

May not be the most stylish defender, but until he limped off Catania didn’t have much chance of scoring. Polyphonic.

    Mobido Diakite [Lazio]

Like a female gondolier in Venice his goals are hard to come by, but the all-action Frenchman grabbed the rudder yesterday and scored for only the second time in his career, sailing in to head home the winner. Forte.

    Raphael Martinho [Cesena]

Put in a strong defensive shift and was also a regular menace down the left. Set up the opener when his screamer was pushed out for Santana to slot home. Also had a massive hand in the second. Energico.

    Luca Cigarini [Atalanta]

The midfield ace directed the traffic just one way and worked overtime supplying the forwards. Came close to scoring with one long-range effort and a complete nuisance down the middle throughout the match. Scherzo.

    Sulley Muntari [Milan]

Tested Stekelenburg on several occasions with one shot in particular asvicious as an armed guard on a Napoli garbage truck. Brought substance and a certain swagger to the midfield while both defending and attacking, with real zeal. Allegro.

    Alessandro Del Piero [Juventus]

The veteran's immense contribution to Italian footballmakes any detached assessment complicated, but his essential contribution has been to enhance every game he has played in and today was no different as he scored another vital goal. Encore.

    Zlatan Ibrahimovic [Milan] 9

Another virtuoso performance from Milan's conductor, who calmly converted a penalty then like Real Madrid off-loading their training ground to the city, sold Kjaer and Stekelenburg a real dummy before holding them off to head home. Capriccio.

    Fabrizio Miccoli [Palermo] 4

Troubled Samir Handanovic on several occasions and like a Palermo pick-pocket slipped past the Udinese defence with disconcerting ease. Finally rewarded when with, Cavani-like composure, he sprung the offside trap to hammer in a sensational drive. Pizzicato.

    Juan Pablo Carrizo [Catania]

Well positioned to foil Urby Emanuelson and several Zlatan Ibrahimovic attempts. Had little chance with Robinho's clever goal but later crucially plucked his in-swinger out of the air and sensationally saved Philippe Mexes' powerful header on the line. Integral.

    Javier Zanetti [Inter] 4

Beat four Genoa players early on and never stopped pressurising their left flank. Also made Emiliano Moretti look as ridiculous as Emilio Fede caught with a case of cash on the border. Maiconish.

    Nicolas Spolli [Catania]

Like the tax police checking Vecchio Ponte goldsmiths, he gave no quarter and made several crucial interceptions. Worked well with Nicola Legrottaglie, who supplied him with the pass to volley home the well-deserved equaliser. Quicksilver.

    Nicola Legrottaglie [Catania] 6

It's the Sicilian Vespers again as Catania cause problems for the established order at Easter, with the veteran being the Elefanti's John of Procida. Held firm at the back, especially under pressure late on. Inspiring.

    Luca Antonini [Milan]

An explosive performance down the left and made a chastening challenge on Francesco Lodi half-way through the game. Also made acutely important blocks on Pablo Barrientos as well as Mariano Izco and Felipe Seymour, in injury time, keeping Milan in the match. Atomic.

    Luciano [Chievo]

Never relied on being lucky, just pure skill as he ran the right flank with the energy of a teenager and the intelligence of a 36-year-old maestro superannuating Fiorentina in passing. Astounding.

    Massimo Donati [Palermo] 2

Tested Jean-Francois Gillet early on with a volley that narrowly flew over then scored the vital equaliser from a sensational free-kick. After turning the match around he continued to perpetrate problems and handed Abel Hernandez his goal. Forceful.

    Arturo Vidal [Juventus] 2

Ran the game from the centre of the pitch and made several dangerous runs into the box. Rewarded for his midfield bossing with a Diego Maradona-like, left-footed screamer into the top corner.Diamond.

    Marquinho [Roma]

A real menace and powered in the equalising header before putting in several dangerous crosses to keep the pressure on Novara's goal. Also had one shot rebound out, allowing Fabio Simplicio to score the third. Plutonium.

    Diego Milito [Inter] 3

At the heart of every Inter attack and caused hat-trick havoc, scoring the opener with an unstoppable header, effortlessly knocking home his second before capping a persistent performance with a pugnacious penalty. Nuclear.

    Sergio Floccari [Parma]

Gave the Lazio defence as much of a chance as Helen Mirren's neighbour getting invited to the actress' Puglia house-warming party. Also assisted the first, headed home the second and volleyed in the third. Platinum.
