WILLIAMS FOCUSED ON 2016 AS IT DROPS APPEAL AGAINST FELIPE MASSA’S BRAZIL EXCLUSION

Williams has decided to drop its appeal against Felipe Massa’s exclusion from the Brazilian Grand Prix citing the disruption it would cause to the team’s preparations for the 2016 Formula 1 season.
Massa finished eighth in his home Grand Prix last weekend, but was disqualified after the race as his right-rear tyre had been measured on the grid registering temperatures of 27 degrees centigrade above the maximum limit of 110 degrees.
The squad initially decided to appeal against the decision to remove Massa from the results, but changed its mind after considering the distraction and high costs a legal challenge would incur as it works towards 2016, although it made it clear that the measurement the FIA had taken was wrong.

A Williams team statement read: “Following detailed consideration the team has concluded that despite not agreeing with the exclusion and believing it has sufficient evidence with which to successfully contest the ruling, it will not formally appeal the decision as a hearing date is unlikely to be available until after the end of the season impacting a time when the team wishes to turn its attention to its 2016 campaign.
“Given the financial climate of the sport, and the fact that the decision does not impact the team’s constructors’ championship position, it has been decided that this would be an unnecessary cost to endure.”
Valtteri Bottas’ fifth place at Interlagos was enough for Williams to secure third place in the constructors’ championship despite Massa’s exclusion, which was another reason the team chose not to appeal the Brazilian’s punishment. But Williams’ deputy team principal, Claire Williams, explained that the squad still has work to do if it wants to make a step up in the competitive order in 2016.

Speaking to Autosport, she said: “It’s a bit different to the feelings last year, but it’s great. It’s great to get third for the team, everyone’s put so much effort in and to consolidate our position is a really positive step.
“But it’s all about looking ahead to next year, we’ve got a lot of work to do to achieve what we want to achieve.”
Williams highlighted track operations as an area where her outfit needs to improve. The team was penalised during the Belgian Grand Prix when it mistakenly fitted two different tyre compounds to Bottas’ car. Williams also came under scrutiny for its strategy calls early in the British Grand Prix when it initially prevented Bottas from attacking Massa, before going back on that decision.

She said: “I think we have to work across the whole of the team. There are areas across track operations we know we need to do a bit better at, we need to do a good job in the tunnel and then in every area.
“If you’re going to change and move upwards, you have to change and look at every area across the whole team in order to achieve that.”
Rob Smedley, Williams’ head of performance engineering, explained that the team’s consistency was the key to it securing third place in the constructors’ championship for a second year in a row.
He said: “We have achieved our primary target for the season which was to retain third in the constructors’, showing a marked improvement compared to where we were a few years ago.

“We’ve shown consistency in consolidating that position and the team has worked very well to achieve that.”
At certain points throughout 2015, Williams was also off the pace on high-downforce tracks like Monaco and Singapore, and it struggled in wet weather.
With Force India openly targeting Williams’ position in the constructors’ championship next season, the Grove-based squad will need to fix its 2015 issues during the off-season.

                            Bice ih fino gledati.
