  • RAFA se VRAČA!!!!!!!

Rafael Nadal is set to play his first full competitive match since Wimbledon on September 25th in Astana, Kazakhstan. Nadal will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a Exhibition match which will take place at the National Tennis Centre at 19:00 (GMT+6). It is also reported that both player's will deliver a signing session for their fans before the match. The news was confirmed on the official website of the Kazakhstani Tennis Federation (http://www.ktf.kz) and by Dias Doskarbayev who is the excutive director of Kazakhstani Tennis Federation.

Inform.kz has also reported that Nadal will meet President Nazarbayev to discuss how tennis can be developed more in the country. The two day visit by Nadal will also include sight seeing and meeting Nazarbayev University and Haileybury students.

Nadal has be absent from the tour as he continues to recover from his wrist injury that he suffered during a training session back in July. The injury resulted in Nadal missing the entire North American hard court swing this summer. In a recent interview the 14 time Grand Slam champion admitted that his recovery period was taking longer than anticipated and that he was unsure as to when he will return back to the tour (read more here). The exhibition match will be a good indication to Nadal of how well his wrist will cope during a full match. It is yet to be confirmed if the match will be televised or not.

    • Prskaj,

          • Why Rafael Nadal is the GOAT
Golden Career Grand Slam holder Rafael Nadal is already seen by many as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and as years have gone by the case for Nadal being the GOAT has gathered real momentum. Tennis legends John McEnroe and Andre Agassi have both confirmed that they believe Nadal is the greatest ever, while the debate rages on in the tennis community on whether the Spaniard, now aged 28, has yet done enough to merit such an acclaim.
Nadal has the Best Win/Loss Record out of all players in the Open Era:

The 'percentage of matches won' or 'win/loss ratio' statistic is not talked about as much as it should, as percentages can never have the glamour of trophies, but it is of great importance nonetheless. In other sports such as cricket the 'average' score for batsmen is used as a barometer of success, and it is entirely reasonable to say that in tennis this should also be one of the factors taken into account when observing which player is the greatest of all time. Nadal leads the Win/Loss record when all surfaces are taken into account, having won 83.7% of his matches. Borg meanwhile is second behind Nadal, at 82.7%. Federer has a percentage of 81.3%, and it is very important to note the Swiss has never had a Win Percentage higher than Nadal's current one; Roger peaked close to 82%.

So thus if we consider the average match result, Rafael Nadal has the highest win percentage since the game turned professional.

Nadal has dominated all his major rivals:

Nadal not only has the best Win Percentage in history, but he also has a favourable Win Percentage (Head To Head Record) against all his major rivals. Nadal has had extremely tough competition too, having to compete with Swiss legend Roger Federer (who in the eyes of most sane tennis fans is unquestionably one of the GOATs) in 7 of his Grand Slam victories. His overall Head To Head record with Federer is extraordinary, having won more than double the matches he has lost: leading 23-10. No one has every dominated an all time great for such a long period like Nadal has dominated Federer; Federer has never led the Head To Head, even when he was at his prime and when Nadal was young. The Slam Head To Head is even more one sided, with Nadal cruising at 8-2. For those who say Nadal's win have been reliant on clay, Nadal leads the Head To Head on outdoor hard courts 8-2, one sided once again.

Nadal also has a winning record against his other major rivals, having a 23-19 lead against Novak Djokovic. However Nadal has dominated Djokovic on the biggest stage, having a 9-3 Grand Slam Head to Head against the Serb. Nadal's record against Murray is comfortable in Nadal's favour, 15-5 to Nadal.

To analyse how difficult Nadal's competition has been, and how outstandingly he has done against them, consider this: Nadal has beaten all-time-greats in 12 of his 14 Grand Slams, beating Federer in 5 of them, Federer and Djokovic in 2, and just Djokovic in 5.

Nadal has shown he is adept on all surfaces:

A frequent criticism of Nadal is that his game is too reliant on the advantage clay courts give him, and he has not been able to find the recipe to success on other surfaces. However despite this being applicable when Nadal was a youngster, as he has grown older he has shown he can compete on the top level away from clay. He is one of only few players who has done the Golden Career Grand Slam: he has won the Olympic Gold Medal on a hard court, won both Wimbledon and US Open multiple times and has won a slam on the hard courts of Australia.

Injuries have hindered Nadal from achieving even more:

It is remarkable that Nadal has achieved so much at 28, already being second on the Grand Slam Titles won list and a Golden Career Grand Slam in the bag, especially given how injuries have restricted his chances to enter tournaments. Although it is true that his own style of play may contribute to the frequency of his injuries, the fact he has done so well when he has had a chance to enter shows how difficult he is to beat when fully fit. Since he broke through into the men's game in 2004 he has had to miss 7 Grand Slams due to injury, which is nearly two years worth of Slams. If not for that, he may have already been past Federer's Grand Slam total.

            So why not Federer ?

Federer is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and I have huge admiration for the Swiss. There is no doubt his impact and legacy has been incredible for tennis, and I will be very sad when he retires. However despite this, I do not believe Federer is the greatest player of all time. There is no doubt statistically he has accumulated fantastic records, but two flaws in his career stick out. Firstly he has been dominated by his major rival, not only for a long time but in the biggest stages: Grand Slams. How can a player be the greatest player of all time when he has a 2-8 Slam Head To Head deficit against his major rival in Grand Slams ? Secondly, and this is a point Andre Agassi raised in an interview this year ( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ten...70/Andre-Agass... ), during his prime the competition for Federer was not as strong as Nadal had to face. Federer had to beat players such Baghdatis, Gonzalez and Roddick in his prime; while Nadal had to deal with All-time-greats Federer and Djokovic in 12 of his 14 majors. One statistic which shows how alarmingly poor Federer's peers were against him compared to the next generation is this:

Between the period 2004-2008, Murray (while he was still young) amassed more wins against Federer than Roddick, Davydenko, Ljubicic, Haas, Gonzalez, Ferrero, Baghdatis, Hewitt, Youzhny, Agassi, Philippoussis, and Safin did put together. This list includes every single Grand Slam finalist Federer faces until 2008 apart from Nadal and Djokovic, as well as many others.

Thus overall I would narrowly give the edge to Nadal in the GOAT debate at this moment in time. His fantastic Win-Loss ratio is the best out of all players since the game was made professional, he has won tournaments on every surface, and he has dominated his rivals in Slams despite having extremely tough competition; in particular Federer and Djokovic. The combination of his unique game and unreal mental strength is what makes him so strong, and it's why in the eyes of tennis legends such as McEnroe and Agassi he is the GOAT.
