  • WTA - Victoria Azarenka

"Victoria Fiodorovna Azarenka (nicknamed “Vika”) was born July 31, 1989 in Minsk, Belarus. She grew up with her parents, Alla and Fedor Azarenka, and her brother, Max. Like any mother, Alla Azarenka was looking for a way to keep her daughter Victoria busy while she was at work at a tennis club in Minsk. She handed the 7-year-old girl a racquet and told her to try hitting against the wall. Shortly after, Victoria participated in her first lesson on a real court. Alla’s problem soon changed from keeping her daughter occupied at the tennis club, to convincing her to come home at a reasonable hour since Victoria preferred to stay at the club playing tennis until late in the day.

Since from the beginning, I really wanted to play all the time and really wanted to play professional,” Victoria has said. “I saw it on TV. And I saw a lot of players from Belarus when I started, like Zvereva and Mirnyi. We started at the same tennis club and I saw how they played and I really wanted to be like them."

"In order to continue progressing in her quest to become a professional tennis player, Victoria moved from Belarus to Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of 15. She was aided by National Hockey League legendary goalie Nikolai Khabibulin and his wife, who is a friend of Victoria’s mother. In Scottsdale, the conditions allowed for Victoria to train more often, and she soon began her junior career as a competitive player.

Victoria had a milestone year in 2005. She won the Junior Australian Open and US Open titles and was the first Belorussian to be named ITF Junior Girls’ World Champion. Victoria also won her first ITF Women’s Circuit title in Luxembourg and reached her first WTA semifinal in Guangzhou. The following year, Victoria reached the WTA top 100 for the first time in her career, with her first top 20 win coming against Nicole Vaidisova in Memphis. For the next couple years, Victoria’s ranking continually improved due to wins over players such as Martina Hingis and Maria Sharapova."

"Victoria’s first WTA tournament win came at the start of the 2009 season, when she defeated Marion Bartoli to capture the Brisbane International title. This was soon followed by her second tournament victory in Memphis, defeating her good friend Caroline Wozniacki in the final. Victoria continued her success during the American hard court season, reaching the semifinals at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and capturing the Sony Ericsson Open title in Miami, where she defeated Serena Williams in the final 6-3, 6-1. With this win, Victoria became the sixth teenage female singles champion in the history of the tournament, with the others being Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams, and Gabriela Sabatini. In October 2009, she reached her career-high ranking of #6 on the WTA Sony Ericsson Tour, and was one of eight women who qualified for the WTA Sony Ericsson year-end championships in Doha.

Since picking up the racquet in the tennis club in Minsk at the age of seven, Victoria has established herself as a premier player on the WTA Tour and has demonstrated that she has the ability to become a top player for years to come."

Like so many of her tennis competitors, Victoria Azarenka has her style game in mind both on and off the court.

When the 2011 US Open tournament was complete, Azarenka shifted her focus to fashion. The tennis beauty made her runway debut during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in NYC. She put her modeling skills to the test taking to the catwalk for the Samantha Black fashion show, part of the Style360 showcase, which hosted events and runway shows featuring independent designers and emerging brands. Azarenka also hosted the Style360 “Sports & Style” kickoff gala on September 11th, together with NBA player Dwight Howard.

Currently you can see Azarenka on the court wearing the Nike “Fall Set Point Knit Dress,” a bright blue, empire waisted flirty frock. Though prior to the Grand Slam, she took part in a high-fashion photoshoot with Women’s Wear Daily at the Hotel Americano rooftop in NYC. A far cry from her sporty U.S. Open threads, Azaranka posed in a variety of Spring 2012 fashions from Kaufmanfranco, Tribune Standard and By Malene Birger.

When describing her personal style, she told WWD: “I’m a girly girl. But sometimes I’m funky and like to look like a hippie, or sometimes I’m classic and really modern.” She also has a weakness for shoes, “Especially Louboutin and Dior. People always tell me I should wear flats because I’m so tall but I’m like, screw them. I love my heels.”

As many of you already know, my US Open run came to an end against Serena in the 3rd round. Even though I felt good in the 2nd set and had a few chances, Serena played an awesome match. When she’s on fire, all you can do is try to give your best and fight for every point and I feel that I’ve done that. She’s a great champion and it’s good to have her back on Tour after what she’s been through this year. On another note, congrats to Sam Stosur; she’d an amazing two weeks and deserved the title.

After the tournament was over, I spent a few days in Monaco just chilling out and spending quality time with friends, before heading back to New York for Fashion Week. New York has always been one of my favourite cities because of all the shopping it offers, so I was ecstatic that I got to host the Style 360 Sports and Style Kickoff Party along basketball star Dwight Howard. He’s actually a really nice guy and the party was cool. I was almost star struck when I met Dallas Mav’s star Shawn Marion and singer Omarion. The event was styled by Boy Meets Girl, and needless to say, I loved their clothes. Being at a fashion show for the first time was an amazing experience and I honestly felt like the luckiest girl in New York.

To top all that off, I sat at the front row of the Bebe fashion show the next day. Sitting so close to the catwalk was pretty fun; however, I got even closer this same afternoon, because I had the chance to walk in the Samantha Black show. I enjoyed having my hair and makeup done by an expert and although I was really nervous before the show, I ended up loving every moment of it. Be sure to check out all the glam pics of the show at http://www.facebook.com/VictoriaAzarenka?ref=ts . Being the girly girl I am, after seeing all the couture, I was very inspired when I went shopping the next morning, and literally filled my trunk with shopping bags.

Although I did enjoy my little excursion into the world of fashion, it’s now time to hit the courts again.

                    Til next time, take care,

Vika Mislim da se ona malo odmara a ujedno i fino provodi.
